Jennifer Salvato Doktorski's "How My Summer Went Up in Flames"

I grabbed this one from the library.

From Goodreads:

First she lost her heart. Then she lost her mind. And now she’s on a road trip to win back her ex. This debut novel’s packed with drama and romance!

Rosie’s always been impulsive. She didn’t intend to set her cheating ex-boyfriend’s car on fire. And she never thought her attempts to make amends could be considered stalking. So when she’s served with a temporary restraining order on the first day of summer vacation, she’s heartbroken—and furious.

To put distance between Rosie and her ex, Rosie’s parents send her on a cross-country road trip with responsible, reliable neighbor Matty and his two friends. Forget freedom of the road, Rosie wants to hitchhike home and win back her ex. But her determination starts to dwindle with each passing mile. Because Rosie’s spark of anger? It may have just ignited a romance with someone new…

A road trip! Road trips scream summer. I once went on a road trip with two guy friends and a girl friend. The guy I liked was dating the other girl, and she was the sister of the other guy. And now I'm married to the guy I liked then! Ha! Anyway. I think road trips are fabulous opportunities for adventure, especially if you're a teenager. Less so if you have kids.

So this book. Poor Rosie goes a little crazy after her boyfriend dumps her - I know I've been there - not burning stuff crazy like Rosie, but driving by their house to see if they're home . . . I've said too much ;) She gets a restraining order and her boy best friend Matty whisks her away on a road trip from NJ to AZ with two of his friends. Of course romance blooms along the way.

A good, fun summer read!

Quotes - some pretty wise words in there!

"Believe it or not, I know what it's like to be obsessed with a boy. Sometimes the best cure is distance. It gives you perspective. Besides, you may even have fun. Did you ever consider that?"

"There are no detours on a road trip, Catalano. There is only the road trip itself," Logan says.

"Ya know, Rosie, sometimes when you don't know what to do, it's okay to do nothing."

  1. I haven't yet went on a road trip with friends but that does sound fun. Love your little road trip story.
